Hot and muggy is the first day of July. The cows have got the right idea by standing in the pond up to their necks! The donkeys have been staying under the shade tree. The rain moved in on Saturday the 3rd and rained hard all day and evening. Amber and Stacy had planned our big 4th celebration for that evening so the picnic got moved into the hay barn. They planned an old fashioned picnic...fried chicken, potato salad, and baked beans. There was homemade cobblers, ice cream and watermelon for dessert. The guys had fun competing at horse shoes. The kids played in the blow up water park....there was a mud puddle from all the rain running off the barn beside it and the next thing we knew our grandson Philip was playing in that. It didn't take long until all the kids were in it. There was a break in the rain around 10:00 so Charlie and Brent shot off the fireworks. A lot of money spent for 5 to ten minutes of pretty sparkles in the sky.
On Monday I canned tomatoes and made grape jelly. I love spending time in my new kitchen....it makes all the difference in the world having the space and nice appliances. Roger is reaping all the benefits getting very spoiled to me baking and cooking all the time...come to think of it he was very spoiled before we moved into the cabin  I had a nice surprise that afternoon, Abbie and Joan came by to give me my birthday gift a day early. Beautiful yellow and red rose bushes that I could plant outside. I know just the spot to put them in. We are so blessed with wonderful friends. My birthday this year is one of those milestones that I am glad to be having but one that needs no attention. The big 50!! I knew I wanted to just hide out for the day so Joan and I spent the day shopping in Joplin...as usual had a blast. Driving home we got into a rainstorm and I got a call from Daniel asking me where I was at and what time I was going to be home...told him I should be home around 6:30, had to drive slow for the rain and would be dropping Joan off at her house. He told me well when I drop Joan off don't set around and visit (imagine that) get home because we were all going out to eat. I was floored that our son of all people had planned this for his mother. We had a wonderful time with our kids and grandkids at Chico's in Muskogee.
All this spotty rain we have been having is sure making it hard to get the hay put up in the barns...not to mention the moods around here!! Roger cut the alfalfa, which is the third cutting, and it looks really good...lots of leaves and very fine stemmed, but of course it got a rain on it. The oats have been harvested and put in the grain bins. We have delivered three semi loads to different Amish farms around Mazie and hopefully we will sell the rest out of the feed store.
On Sunday the 11th I fixed a basket of garden goodies to take to my sister Lorrie for her birthday along with some jellies and salsa I had made. Only five days difference in our birthdays so I look more forward to hers than I do mine. I am nine years older than her so she was like my baby doll growing up. She was the flower girl at our wedding.....wow time is clicking by. Been a busy week at the feed store, this time of year it comes in spurts. We have been selling hay as fast as we can get it hauled in. Taylor and Travis have been getting some of the deliveries took care of. The Peach Festival is going on in Porter on Saturday so when the feed store closed I went and got me a 1/2 bushel of peaches. That place was so crowded they were directing traffic in and out, folks were grabbing peaches like they were going out of style. Got some of them made into freezer jam and I am planning on making some preserves, and canning a few. It's about all I can do to keep up with all the tomatoes. Got half of the corn put up in the freezer, it looks like about another week before the rest of it is done. I planted it in stages so it wouldn’t all need harvesting at once.
July is a month for birthdays...Happy Birthday to our daughter-in-law Nichole....the 19th. The girls took Nichole to Branson for a day of shopping....I would have loved to went but somebody had to hold the fort down. One night this week we will have her party depending on which night the guys can come out of the field early enough.
